TRENTON, N.J. — An off-duty New Jersey county sheriff's officer who was shot and seriously wounded when he tried to intervene in a domestic dispute has won a $5.9 million civil judgment against the gunman.

A judge recently awarded the money to Joshua Hahn and his wife after Billy Heisler — who was convicted last month on attempted murder and weapons charges — failed to respond to the suit.

The 34-year-old Mercer County Sheriff's officer suffered two punctured lungs and a shattered vertebra when he tried to break up a fight between Heisler and his sister at a Hamilton Township pizzeria in July 2007. Hahn eventually had to retire on permanent disability.

Hahn was awarded $963,871 in lost wages; $1.5 million for pain and suffering and $2.5 million in punitive damages. Hahn's wife was awarded $1 million,

A Cook County Circuit Court Judge today warned a Chicago woman who allegedly made off with a $745 Fendi handbag not to return to Neiman Marcus on North Michigan Avenue. According to prosecutors, Victoria Davis, 44, of the 5900 block of South Michigan Avenue removed the designer purse from a display and then walked out of the store with it hanging on her shoulder.

Bartlett police are searching for a gunman who shot another man in the head inside of a late-night dance club in the northwest suburb, officials said. The shooting occurred at about 3 a.m. at the Cadillac Ranch, 1175 Lake St., police said. The bar is open until 4 a.m., police said.

Man hospitalized after shooting in Downers Grove, woman held
A man was hospitalized today after being shot in the neck in what is being classified as a domestic-related incident, Downers Grove police said.

MOBILE, Alabama (DSLC News)- Video shows Lawrence Wallace Junior hours before he fatally stabbed the police officer. Handcuffed with his arms behind his back, Wallace is very talkative, playing to the news cameras. It's as though he's enjoying telling us what he's getting ready to do.

News 5 has shared this video with Mobile police, when we slow it down, Wallace appears to fold the pendant and slide something out of it and slip it in between his fingers. This is what he says afterward, "I'll be out before I reach down there."

After he gets in the back of the police car, and the door shuts. He smiles for the cameras. Still running his mouth he says, I'll see y'all in a minute. This is all part of the movie man. I'll see y'all in a minute".

What we didn't know about this movie as he smugly called it was the officer you see to the left opening the door to the police car, would be victim to his deadly plot; officer Steven Green.

Wallace stabbed officer green inside the sally port of metro jail. One witness says he never even saw the weapon.

Armed with a gun Wallace took off for a neighborhood off Dauphin Island parkway in the officer's car. He ran underneath this house on Daytona drive. Where she shot a second officer. After holding sharpshooters, tactical units, and swat team members at bay for three and a half hours, Wallace's movie came to silent end, with him in a body bag, and the community with one less officer to serve and protect.

Two dead, another injured in overnight violence
Two men were shot and a third man beaten in two separate incidents on West Side early Saturday morning, according to police.

In the Little Village neighborhood, a man, age 24, was shot and killed after being beaten during a possible robbery attempt, police said.

The man was found in the street on the 3000 block of West 23rd Street about 3:30 a.m., near an alley between Albany Avenue and Whipple Street.

A man he was with, age 33, was also beaten and treated on the scene, police said.

Two men were injured, one fatally, when the car they were in crossed into the path of a CTA bus and struck the bus head-on in the South Side Englewood neighborhood Sunday morning. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is concerned the county jail is fast becoming a repository for the mentally ill.

About 2,000 of the 10,000 detainees at Cook County Jail, 26th Street and California Avenue in Chicago, have mental health problems, Dart said Thursday night during a speaking engagement at St. Xavier University in Chicago.

Gov. Pat Quinn’s decision to cut spending on mental health — including the looming closure of the Tinley Park Mental Health Center — may increase the problem, he said.

In another bad turn for a 2012-2013 city sticker design contest for Chicago students that last week became mired in controversy over gang symbols, the artwork of the runner-up winner will also not be used, City Clerk Susana Mendoza announced Saturday.

The “Chicago Heroes” design by Caitlin Henehan, a senior at Resurrection High School, was chosen after Mendoza nixed the previous winner’s entry because of questions posed by former police superintendent Jody Weiss and others about perceived gang signs incorporated into that 15-year-old boy’s drawing.

I know you have a ton of news junkie readers and I am figuring many are old enough to be former readers of Mike Royko's daily column that was featured in several Chicago newspapers.

I was a young newspaper boy for the Chicago Today and the Chicago Daily News afternoon newspapers. Long story short I met Mike Royko and he autographed these two last edition Chicago Daily News newspapers for me. They are in great condition and secured in frames.

Can you post them on your blog and see if anybody is interested in purchasing either one or both? I am take the family on a long awaited vacation and can use the extra money. This 2% raise we got from the police department just isn't cutting the double digit cost increase of everything today.

Hours after photos of the actor looking shockingly gaunt surfaced online, Culkin pulled out of his previously scheduled deejay gig at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge, People reports.

Culkin, 31, is said to have bailed on his monthly gig at the West Village hot spot at the last minute, but still managed to leave behind his personal playlist for partygoers.

"He's here all the time. He comes pretty often. Tonight, something just came up and he couldn't make it," a club employee told the magazine. "But he did drop off his iPod – that's what's playing. It's a shame he's not here, because he always plays really good music."

New photos of a gaunt and goateed Culkin walking through Manhattan led to concerns about the former child star’s health on Thursday — although his camp says any worries are completely unfounded.
